AAEP 2024 Accomplishments

Emergency Behavioral Health became recognized as an emerging specialty focus under the American Board of Medical Specialties. Consulted with ABEM on next curriculum steps. Recruitment begun for long‑term Focused Practice Designation support team. AAEP (American Association for Emergency Psychiatry) and ABEM (American Board of Emergency Medicine) jointly developed a proposal requesting that Emergency Behavioral Health be recognized as an official Focused Practice Designation. The proposal was submitted to COCERT (the ABMS Committee on Certification), which approved it.

Completed 2024 Bylaws + Operational Guidelines rewrite. Created new Secretary role; formalized Treasurer role; expanded voting board to 9. Updated membership structure so affiliate members remain non‑voting but fully participatory

Marked major organizational milestones (15th National Update on Behavioral Emergencies (NUBE) Conference held Dec. 9-11, 2024, in Phoenix; Rising Scholars program became active.)

Strengthened financially. Maintained strong reserves (154% of annual expenses). Grew and diversified assets via Flourish Cash (generated $19,299 since inception; $12,974 YTD). Ended year profitable ($1,176 surplus).

Delivered multiple grand rounds and national presentations (AADPRT, CORD, NAMI, WAOPS, WPA, CIT).

Advanced education projects (observation status, agitation primers).

Mentored medical students interested in emergency psychiatry.

Supported the Coalition for Psychiatric Emergencies (fiscally sponsored by AAEP). 1) Engaged in Focused Practice Designation (FPD) referenced above. Coalition leaders were appointed to ABEM task force and ACEP committee for FPD. Coalition representation was secured in Focused Practice Designation eligibility and policy development. 2) Achieved Organizational Independence & Infrastructure. Realized financial independence with 12+ months operating reserves. Developed and launched updated Wikipedia page, coalition website and donation capability, LinkedIn and Facebook pages, CPE email address, letterhead for organizational use, shared board drive. 3) Growth & Visibility increased. Steering Committee expanded to 12 organizations. Coalition social media badge created. Advocacy campaign to end chemical restraints was launched.
