Intervening between Intent and Injury: Tarasoff and Targeted Violence in the PES
Register NowDate & Time: Wednesday, June 25th 11am PT/12pm MT/1pm CT/2pm ET About the webinar: As we approach the 50th anniversary of California Supreme Court’s 1976 Tarasoff II it seems an appropriate time to reconsider the clinical, social, ethical, and legal responsibilities of emergency psychiatry in the identification and prevention of targeted violence. At its most essential, targeted violence is when an assailant chooses a particular target prior to a violent attack. Notably, nothing in this definition requires that it be a mass attack, ideologically driven, or that it occurs in a specific location. It requires only space between intent and injury. This discussion will explore what options emergency psychiatry has to intervene in that space with particular reference to the legacy of Tarasoff. Webinar format: AAEP webinar moderators will kick off each session with a 10-15 minute introduction to the topic. The remainder of the session time is dedicated to open group discussion, allowing for deeper exploration and exchange of insights.
